At the time of his enlistment his civilian occupation was given as timber hewer and he was living in Claymore, Western Australia. His younger brother William was also employed in the same occupation at Claymore. Thomas had also been a Policeman in Ceylon for 5 years.

Thomas had two brothers who also fell; they too, are honoured on the Lairg War Memorial.
Private Alexander [‘Alick’ or Alex] MacLean,
Regimental number 848 of the 12th Battalion, Australian Infantry, Australian Imperial Force.
Killed in action 25 April 1915 ANZAC landings, Gallipoli
Commemorated on the LONE PINE MEMORIAL at Panel 35.
Second Lieutenant Kemp MacLean served with British forces [13th Bn. Royal Scots] He was killed in action 28 March 1918 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial at Bay 1 and 2.

He was 33 and the son Donald and Elizabeth (Macpherson) Maclean of Drumliath, Bonar Bridge.
Commemorated along with brothers Alexander and Kemp, on the Lairg War Memorial, and on the Creich War Memorial, Bonar Bridge [shown as Private] and on the Glasgow Sutherland Association Memorial Plaque, Dornoch Cathedral and on the family headstone in Lairg Burial Ground.
