Loftus left Melbourne on the Medic on 16 December 1916, arriving at Plymouth, England on 18 February 1917 where he was appointed Lance Corporal in September and later Corporal. On 1 April 1918 Loftus was sent to France with the 5th Machine Gun Battalion. He was admitted to the 8th Australian Field Ambulance on 6 November where he was treated for influenza. Loftus was transferred to England to be treated for debility on 13 December prior to returning to Australia from Devonport on the Delta on 25 January 1919 and was discharged on 9 April.
