Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Joseph Augusta and S J WOODS, of Tuncestor via Lismore, NSW

Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Woods. of "Rockdale." Eastwood, Lismore, received the sad news that their second son, Private Oliver Charles Woods, died of wounds in France. He was about two  years on active service. And they have not heard since the first report how their fifth son, Corporal Albert Henry Woods, is progressing; he was wounded in France on 1st  September, 18.

The following letter has been received by Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Woods, Eastwood, Lismore, from Chaplain D.B. Blackwood: -

France 26/9/18 - I feel I must send you a line to express my deepest sympathy with you in the sad loss of your fine son, O.C. Woods, of the 49th Battalion.  He was sitting in a trench with some of his mates, several of whom were playing cards, after a successful advance.  Just before dusk a shell landed right amongst them, killing one and wounding several.  Your boy was the worst wounded, being hit badly about the buttock and upper leg.  He was carried to the doctor and immediately his wounds were dressed and he was sent on.  However, he died as they were putting him into the ambulance car.  His body was taken back in the ambulance to hancourt where he was reverently buried with the full rites of his church on the 16th inst., and a cross erected over his grave.  It is in a military cemetery.  His personal effects will be sent on by the military authorities.  I feel keenly for you in so great a loss.  He has truly laid down his life for others, following the Master's example, Who died for us all.  So I believe he will share His reward.  I pray you may have the Divine comfort and peace of the dear Lord in your loss - Yours truly, D.B. Blackwood chaplain (Church of England), 49th Battalion.
