With written permission from his parents (10/7/1917) he enlisted at the age of 18years and one month.

Described on enlisting as  5' 3 1/2" tall; 119lbs; medium complextion; brown eyes; dark hair; Church of England.

Previous service:  4 years Senior Cadets and 16days Saper in 12th Artillery Brigade, FA.

15/2/1917             Enlisted in Adelaide

16/2/1917             Commanding Officer appointed Alfred to 18th reinforcement, 5th Divisional Signal Company.

1/3 - 16/10/1917   Mitcham Camp

21/11/1917           Embarked Melbourne on HMAT Nestor for Egypt - in Divisional Signal Troop

15/12/1917           Disembarked at Suez, Egypt
