Although Herbert and Mary Hanson had 4 children, he enlisted and joined the 27th Battalion and later the 10th. His unit left Melbourne on the Port Lincoln on 20 October 1916 and from England proceeded to France on 7 September 1917. Herbert attended an Officer course at Cambridge in June 1918 and was appointed Lieutenant on 1 September. He returned to Australia on the Norman on 15 August 1919 and was discharged on 22 September. Lieutenant Herbert Hanson was mentioned in despatches - No. 31448 London Gazette of 17 July 1919.
