2nd Lieutenant Lionel Ernest Osborne Wilshire 35th Battalion AIF, killed in action 31st May, 1917. He was struck through the heart by a piece of shrapnel from an exploding shell. Buried in the Strand Military Cemetery Ploegsteert Belgium.
His brother, Lieutenant Sydney Harold Osborne Wilshire 13th Brigade Australian Field Artillery was a bank clerk in Deniliquin prior to the war. He was killed in action 31st July 1917, precisely 2 months later. Now lies in the Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery 5 km west of Ypres. One of his men stated in his Red Cross file “He was a good man, all the boys liked him.”
A third brother who enlisted Vivian Osborne Wilshire was discharged whilst at Liverpool camp in October 1917 due to his two brothers being killed.
They were the sons of Osborne Wilshire and Mary Louisa Howe of Deniliquin NSW.

News has been received that Lieut. Lionel Ernest Osborne Wilshire; eldest son of the late Mr. Osborne Wilshire a well-known figure Deniliquin prior to his decease a few years ago, has, been killed in action. Deceased, who was, a native of Deniliquin, and about 30 years of age, was in the office of Mr. Wilkinson for a considerable period, and left here in order to complete his legal studies with a view of entering the Bar. He left Australia in the middle of last year as a sergeant. Deceased has a brother (Doley) at the front and another, (Vivian) is in camp.
