After recuperating in England from wounds received at Pozieres, Pte 659 James Sullivan was found guilty at a Court Martial dated 3 March 1917 of 1. Being absent without leave between 4 - 23 December 1916; 2. Using a false pass; and 3. Assaulting the apprehending Police Constable by punching him in the face.
He was sentenced to six months detention and loss of 150 days' pay. The sentence was served at Sandhill Camp, Longbridge Deverill, after which he rejoined the 19th Battalion on 22 November 1917.
