106 years ago today, on the 11th June 1917, Private David William Murray, referred to as Dave, 35th Battalion (Reg No-2431), cabinet maker (Mr. J Murray, Hamilton), father of one (Dorothy Jean, born 1910, Hamilton, N.S.W.), was Killed in Action during the Battle of Messines, age 28. Cause of death not stated.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.

Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 26th January 1889 to David (died 7.7.1929, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 68, PRESBYTERIAN-2NW. 76), of Turnbull Street, Hamilton, N.S.W.) and Jane Murray (died 13.5.1931, age 69, of Cowper Street, Wallsend, N.S.W., PRESBYTERIAN-2NW. 78.); husband of Jane Melvena (Melvina) Murray nee Dawber (Janie, married 1909, Wickham, N.S.W., died 26.1.1953, age 62, 35 years a widow) of 43 Waller's Lane Wickham, N.S.W. and 37 Railway Lane, Wickham, N.S.W. and 22 Wilton Street, Merewether, N.S.W., Dave enlisted on the 19th June 1916 at Broadmeadow, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.
Admitted to isolation hospital 3.4.1917 (German measles).

David's name mentioned with Private Ernest Hemmings, 46th Battalion, Reg No-2914, KIA 28th April 1918, age 37, resting at Adelaide Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux, France. Plot III Row K Grave 4., memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery - METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 23 SW. 1.

Dave’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 25), Belgium.

Place of Association – Hamilton, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Mr. Murray’s name has also been inscribed on the St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll, Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor, Scots Kirk (Hamilton) Roll of Honour, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton Mechanics' Institute Roll of Honour, Newcastle Rechabites Honour Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised gravesite of wife Jane in remembrance of her husband’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 3-176. 1.
