CEW Smith was the son of Robert James and Clara Smith, of Stirling Rd., Claremont, Western Australia.
He was listed as missing between the dates 19-22 August 1916 at Pozieres. His service file states he was buried at Mouquet Farm by Chaplain William K. Douglas M.C. without any further detail. His death was not confirmed until 7 months later.
Charles's older brother 5081 Pte. Ernest John Smith 28th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Morlancourt, France on 10 June 1918, age 25.
Clara wrote a short note to the AIF in 1920, “I am still waiting for the form for my second son, Pte. C.E.W. Smith, No 4243, 12th Batt.,missing at Mouquet Farm Aug 1916. Also, no particulars received yet. It is only 4 years ago, it is not much to ask for, from a greatful (sic) country, C. Smith.”
Charles's father passed away in 1923.
During 1937, the remains of Charles Everard William Smith were discovered near Mouquet Farm, confirmed by the presence of his identity disc. His remains were interred in the London Cemetery and Extension, Longueval, France.
