Biography contributed by Robert Wight

Mrs. W. M. Hills of Seymour-street New Town has received the following letter from Major J. M. Lean, office of Base Records with regard to her son, Private L. F. Hills, who was reported to have been killed in action last October:-

"With reference to the report of the regrettable loss of your son the late Private L. F. Hills. 40th Battalion, I am now in receipt of advice which shows that he died on Octobor 12, 1917 of wounds received in action, gunshot wounds on right thigh and head, and was buried at Lijssenhoek, the Rev. E. Gray officiating. These additional details are furnished by direction, it being the policy of the department to forward all information received in connection with the death of members of the A.I.F."

Mrs. Hills also received yesterday a letter from a staff captain on behalf of the Brigadier-General and Director of Graves Registration to the effect that her son was buried in Lijssenhoek Military Cemetery, south of Poperitighe, and that the grave had been registered and marked by a durable wooden cross with inscription bearing his name, rank, regiment, and date of death. The letter added that a photograph of the cross would be taken as soon as possible, and six copies would be sent to Mrs. Hills, but owing to the large number of request received, there might be some considerable delay.
