He arrived in Australia in early 1913 having served with the Royal Field Artillery in India for 12 years until about 1912; discharged with rank of Sergeant. Upon enlistment in the AIF, [15 September 1914] he was a Corporal and was a Lieutenant with the 53rd Battery, 14th Brigade Australian Field Artillery at the time of his death
