Pte. William Gillard


William enlisted at Darlinghurst, to the 45th Battalion in Sydney NSW. Service No. 3283.

His address at the time was "Erin", Herbert St, Rockdale NSW. He was a 24 year old labourer, 5 feet 10 inches tall.

He embarked on 'Beltana' 25 Nov 1916. Suffered a severe gun shot wound to his back and later a severe gun shot wound to his right ankle 5 May 1918. Spent time in hospital in the UK and was eventually invalided out on the Hospital ship 'Suevia'.

He received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal (he was ineligible for the 1914/15 Star as he didn't enlist and embark until 1916)

He married Ruby G Daley in 1921 and they had six children.

He committed suicide in 1961 in Sydney.
