Add my storyBiography
Fourth son of Police Inspector Herbert and Emma Thomas. His father planted a boab tree on his birth, which stands out the front of the old police station, Broome. A commemoration plaque is sited at the tree, remembering father and son.
My grandmother Beatrice (Fred's sister) always recalled knowing when Fred was near, as he was always whistling. Fred joined the AIF on his 18th birthday, 03/03/1915 and followed his older brothers Bert and Charlie overseas. He served with the 28th Battalion, D Company at Egypt, Gallipoli and France. He was assigned as a despatch rider and runner.
On the night he was killed at Pozieres, he was running messages for his Company.
A tree planted by his mother on May Ave, Kings Park is a lasting memorial. - Bruce Macgregor
