Theodore Morley SPICE was born in Chittering in Western Australia in 1887

His parents were Frederick Samuel SPICE & Caroline MORLEY who married in Upper Swan, WA in 1883

He married Flora Isabell Emily EMERY in WA in 1908 - two children Isabel & Doreen

Theodore Morley Spice was born in Chittering, WA, son of Frederick and Caroline Spice on the 31.7.1887. He was a striker (blacksmithing) at the Midland Railway Workshops, and his denomination was Church of England. Theodore was described as being 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a chest measurement of 36 – 38½ inches, dark complexion, brown eyes and dark hair. He had previously served with the Guildford Volunteers, Midland Junction Corps (disbanded). He was 28 years old, and his next of kin was his wife, Flora Isabell Spice, née Emery. At first, she lived in Boundary Rd, Midland Junction, then she moved to 81 Hampton Rd Fremantle (NOTE the aunt of Douglas Emery lived at 80 Hampton Rd.) Later, Flora’s address was c/- of Mrs J Emery, Moran St, Beaconsfield). Theodore was rejected for enlistment on the 21.8.15 but was accepted on the 30.8.1915 at Blackboy Hill. He joined the 12th reinforcements, 11th Battalion as a Private on the 16.10.15 at Blackboy Hill. His will was witnessed by T Barber, Camp secretary Blackboy Hill and John Ventress Wedderburn, Journalist with the YMCA.

Theodore embarked at Fremantle on RMS Mongolia. On the 2.3.16 he joined his Battalion in Habista and embarked from Alexandria on the 29.3.16 to join the BEF (the Roll lists him as Theodore Worley Spice). They disembarked at Marseille on the 3.4.16.

Theodore was killed in action on the 30.5.1916 and buried at Fleurbaix Bethune Nord Pas-de-Calais, France, which is west of Lille near the Belgian border. He is buried in the Military Cemetery Rue Pettilon, 2 ¾ miles East of Laventie and 4 miles SW of Armentières. Originally labelled Plot 2 Row A, grave 16, in 1925 the numbering of the graves was amended to Plot 1 Row H Grave 34.

The effects returned to his widow included a disc, wallet, photos, letters, testament, pocket book, nickle, pencil; belt and buttons, lanyard, pipe, autograph book, strap.

The Funeral fund was held by the Druids Lodge, Fremantle. Pensions were paid to Flora and daughters Isabell and Doreen.
