Richard Roberts was born in Worcester, in South Africa, but came to Australia when he was two years of age. He was from Woy Woy, New South Wales. He only joined the 18th Battalion in France during very late 1916. He was severely wounded in the head on the 25 February 1917, and died in a hospital in Rouen, France, on 4 March 1917.
His younger brother, 4870 Pte. John Henry Roberts, 54th Battalion AIF, died of wounds almost a year later on 15 February 1918.
They were the sons of Charles and Catherine Roberts, of Fettler, Woy Woy, New South Wales.
