John Alexander Hunter McKEOWN was born in Romsey, Victoria on 23rd October, 1894

His parents were John Alexander McKEOWN & Jane HUNTER

He had previously served for three & a half years with the 29th Light Horse Regiment at Werribee from 1912 (Citizens Forces) before he enlisted in Melbourne on 16h February, 1916 & embarked with the 7th Infantry Battalion, 18th Reinforcements on 3rd July, 1916 from Melbourne on the HMAT Ayrshire

He was appointed Flying Officer and then 2nd Lieutenant while conducting courses on aerial combat at Turnberry in Scotland - in late June 1918 he was sent to France & became ill with influenza. Following recuperationhe was taken on strength on 18th August with No. 2 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps which was attached to the 80th Wing, Royal Air Force

He was Killed in Action in France on 14th October, 1918 when his plane was shot down in aerial combat

John was originally buried at the Tressin Communal Cemetery and later reinterred at the Laventie Military Cemetery

His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial & the Werribee War Memorial in Victoria
