Corporal Smith served with 54 Field Division Ordnance Field Park, and was promoted to Sergeant on 18 January 1943. Paul was born in Yorkshire, England in 1915, second of four children of Harold Waterhouse Smith (b1878 in Yorkshire, England) and Elizabeth Enwright (b1886 in Dublin, Ireland). Harold started working in 1891 as an Errand Boy, and was a Baker in 1912 when he and Elizabeth married in Brighouse in Yorkshire. In 1922 Harold and Elizabeth immigrated with their four children, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Balranald and settling in Victoria - Swan Hill and St Kilda - where they raised their family and Harold was a Baker (and Bakery Shop owner with son Michael).
