Died on this date – 7th August…… Percy (Paddy) Bennett was born at Peakhurst, Sydney, New South Wales in 1889. He enlisted with Australian Naval & Military Expedition on 12th August, 1914 & was issued a Service Number of 74 & was posted to “A” Company, 1st Tropical Unit.

Private Percy Bennett embarked from Sydney, NSW on H.M.A.S. Berrima on 19th August, 1914. He was discharged on 4th March, 1915 from Australian Naval & Military Expedition – termination of period of engagement. He had served for 206 days.

Percy Bennett enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 16th March, 1915 a 25 year old, single, Bus Driver from Forest Road, Peakhurst, NSW.
Private Bennett embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 12th May, 1915 with the 5th Infantry Brigade, 17th Infantry Battalion “A” Company. He proceeded to join M.E.F. (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) for Gallipoli Peninsula on 16th August, 1915.

Private Bennett disembarked at Alexandria from Mudros on 9th January, 1916 (after evacuation of Gallipoli).

He embarked from Alexandria on 17th March, 1916 to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 23rd March, 1916.

Private Percy Bennett was wounded in action in France on 26th July, 1916 at Pozieres. He was admitted to 57th Field Ambulance on 26th July, 1916 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to head & eyes then transferred & admitted to 5th General Hospital at Rouen, France on 27th July, 1916. Private Bennett embarked from Rouen on 31st July, 1916 on Hospital Ship St. Patrick.

Private Bennett was admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, England on 1st August, 1916 with G.S.W. to Head & both eyes.

Private Percy Bennett died at 4.35 am on 7th August, 1916 at 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, England from wounds received in action in France – G.S.W. of Skull & Septic Meningitis.

He was buried on 10th August, 1916 in Wandsworth (Earlsfield) Cemetery, London, England where 34 other WW1 Australian Soldiers are buried.
