The second of seven children, Athley was born in 1923 in Perth WA to Leonard James Ballard Howson (b1896 in Perth WA) and Theresa Martha Harriet Upton-Medley (b1900 in Fremantle WA). Leonard (a Horse Driver) and Theresa married in 1920 in Perth WA, where they raised their family. Leonard had served in WWI (Private; Service No:3013).
Athley was working as a Labourer in Perth WA in 1941 when he enlisted in the ACMF (Gunner; Service No:W19618) and was attached to 109 Anti Tank Regiment when he Discharged to enlist in the AIF on 28 July 1942. Athley served with 109 Anti Tank Regiment and 62 Field Park Coy, and was a Sapper (Service No:WX28619) attached to 3 CRE Works when he was Discharged in June 1946.
In 1948 Athley was a Salesman in Perth WA when he married Olive Thornborough (b1927 in Warwickshire, England) - Olive had emigrated with her sister in 1934 (following the death of her mother) arriving in Brisbane QLD on board the Moreton Bay. Athley and Olive settled in Perth WA where Athley worked as a Salesman. In 1952 Athley was jailed for four months for robbery in Pinjarra, Wongan Hills and Gin Gin, and in 1955 he and Olive and their three children were living in the Caravan Park at Sorrento when Athley was imprisoned for three months for stealing 'to provide comforts for his family who were living in appalling conditions' (Mirror Perth; Saturday 5 March 1955; p15). Athley was living in Cannington WA when he died in 1980. Olive died in 1979.
