Born in Northam WA in 1922, Albert was the eldest of four children (sons) born to Lyndhurst (Bertie) Albert Polain (b1885 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Vera Annie Penniment (b1903 in Kalgoorlie, WA). Bertie was a Biograph Showman at Hannan's in Kalgoorlie WA in 1916, and married Vera in 1921 in Coolgardie WA. The couple settled in Northam WA where they raised their family and Bertie worked as a Shop Assistant.

Albert was working as a Dental Mechanic in Northam WA in January 1941 when he enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:W16083). He was a Corporal attached to 8 CCS when he enlisted in the AIF in August 1941 (Service No:WX15738). Albert served with 10 Armoured Regiment, 20th Field Ambulance and 58 Dental Unit. He was a Staff Sergeant atatched to 71 Dental Unit when he was Discharged in November 1945.

In 1943 Albert married Edna May Christmass (b1922 in Northam, WA) - Edna was an Aircraftwoman (Service No:99854). The couple settled in Northam WA where Albert worked as a Shop Assistant in 1949 before working again as a Dental Mechanic by 1954. In the late 1950s the family moved to Merredin, and then to Perth WA - Albert continued work as a Dental Mechanic/Technician. He died in 1984 and Edna in 2015.
