BARTLETT - Killed in action in France on 13th March, 1918, Pte. Frederick W. Bartlett, 59th Battalion, beloved third son of John and S.A. Bartlett of Aphasia Street, Newtown, and dear brother of A.G., E., C.J., H.E. and P.E. Also loved husband of Ethel, and loving father of Phyllis and Hilda, aged 30 years.

Frederick William Bartlett was the 3rd son of John & SA Bartlett of Aphrasia Street Newtown.  At the time of his enlistment on 9 May 1917 aged 29 years 6 months, he was married to Ethel and resided at 334 Albert Street South Melbourne.  He had 2 daughters, Phyllis and Hilda and listed his occupation was a labourer.

Frederick was appointed to the 59th Battalion and embarked from Sydney on the ship HMAT Port Melbourne on 16 July 1917.  He disembarked in Liverpool England on 16 September 1917 and finally arrived in France on 8 January 1918, joining the 59th Battalion as part of the 9th Reinforcements in the field, on 13 January 1918

Exactly 2 months later, Frederick was Killed in Action on 13 March 1918.

Sadly, Williams’s widow Ethel received correspondence from the AIF office in London that his personal effects were to be returned to her however they were lost at sea when the ship they were on, the SS Barunga was sunk by a German submarine off the Isles of Sicilly on 15 July 1918.  That ship was also carrying 800 sick and wounded bound for Australia.  Ethel later remarried to Mr Donald and relocated to Surry Hills in Melbourne.
