William was the son of Thomas William and Elizabeth Smith, of West Townsville, Queensland.
His older brother, 2016 Pte. Thomas Smith 9th Battalion AIF, had been killed in action at Gallipoli on 1 October 1915, aged 31.
William Smith joined the 26th Battalion on the Western Front during February 1917. He was killed in action at Lagnicourt when his unit attacked the village on 27 March 1917.
