Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Allen John Goldsworthy (Service No:2317) enlisted in the AIF on 22 March 1916, and was attached to 36th Infantry Battalion on 17 October 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney on board HMAT Borda A30. On 31 August 1920, Private Goldsworthy (Driver MT) embarked from England for Sydney (with his wife) on board HMT Wahe, and was attached to Australian Motor Tramsport Section (AMTS) at Discharge on 7 January 1921.

Jack was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1893, sixth of nine children of Alfred Goldsworthy (b1842 in Somerset, England) and his second wife Emma Emmerton (b1862 at Greenwich Park, New South Wales). Alfred was a Currier and Metal Merchant before immigrating in 1878 - he arrived in Sydney on board the Hero. Alfred and Emma married in 1881 in Murrumburrah via Harden, New South Wales, and lived there and in Goulburn before settling in Sydney in the late 1880s. Alfred worked as a Currier (Leather Worker) and Warehouseman.

Jack worked as a Labourer and Brickmaker in Sydney before enlisting in the AIF in 1916. He was with the AIF in London in 1919 when he married his first wife Francis Elliott (b1898 in Sussex, London). Jack and Francis arrived in Sydney in 1920 on board HMT Wahe. Following Jack's Discharge from the Army, they settled in Sydney where Jack was an Armourer with the Department of the Army until retirement. Francis died in 1944, and Jack remarried in 1950 to Ivy Devine. On 13 November 1958 Jack was awarded the Imperial Service Medal.  Jack died in 1959 and Ivy in 1978.
