Syd was born in Foxhow, Victoria in 1903, fifth of ten children of John (Jack) William Barby (b1863 in Inverleigh, Victoria) and Jane Dunn (b1877 at Leigh Creek via Moorabool, Victoria). Jack was a Labourer in 1893 when he and Jane married in Foxhow, where they lived and Jack was a Labourer. The family moved to Lismore and then Colac, where Jack worked as a Labourer and Farmer.

Syd started work in Geelong as a Labourer, and in the 1930s was a Transport/Motor Lorry Driver for the VGR. In 1931 he married Eunice Grace Rilen (b1907 in Castlemaine, Victoria) - Eunice was a Weaver in Geelong. They settled in Geelong where they raised their family and Syd worked for the Railways as a Porter. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and, following his Discharge, he and Eunice lived in Cobden, Healesville, Laverton, Burrumbeet, Avoca, Werribee and Newcobe. Syd worked for the Victorian Railways - as Porter and Assistant Station Manager - until retirement in the late 1960s.
