Alfred was born on the 4th of July 1898 in Tea Tree Gully. He lived in Warnertown, South Australia and went to school in Port Pirie. His occupation was as a Blacksmith. His mother was Elizabeth Averis, and his father was A. J. Averis.
Alfred enlisted as a private on the 2nd of October 1916 at 18 years and 2 months of age and officially joined the military on the 1st of August 1917, 9 months later. To enlist, Alfred required a signed consent form from his mother. He embarked on the HMAT A68 Anchises to Liverpool as a Sapper as part of the 5th Divisional Signal Company. Over the next month, he was moved between different training camps and signal units before being sent to the front lines a few weeks before the war ended on 9th October 1918. He embarked for France and joined the 1st Divisional Signal Company but fell ill in October and was hospitalised, with the war ending while he was ill.
On the 27th of March 1919 Alfred was admitted to hospital in France with measles. He was moved to a measles specialist hospital in England.
Alfred married Edith Dodd on the 24th of April 1919. He continued to live in England, performing civilian occupations, awaiting repatriation. Alfred returned to Australia on the 6th of August 1919. He was discharged from the military on the 27th of November 1919.
On the 22nd of June 1949, a newspaper published an article about the four generations of Averis meeting, with Alfred’s father, Alfred’s children and grandchildren all meeting at once. The next day, another article was published about Alfred meeting his brother for the first time.
Alfred died at the age of 86 on the 22nd of August 1984 at the Repatriation Hospital due to natural causes. He is buried at Centennial Park Cemetery.
