William left Australia on HMAT Nestor on 28 February 1918. His parents had written to the Army’s recruiting depot granting consent for their son to enlist, adding that he not be posted to the battlefront until he turned 19 – on May 19 1918. The Army could not oblige the request due to “current requirements”. William served for a short time as a sapper in France before returning to Australia on the Takada and was discharged on 13 August 1919.
