Trooper William George Williams (Service No:1045) enlisted in the AIF on 14 December 1914, and was attached to 3rd Light Horse Regiment on 2 November 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Suez on board HMAT A73 Commonwealth. Trooper Williams served with the 3rd LHR at Gallipoli, Romani, Heliopolis and Port Said, and was WiA - GSW knee - at El Arish on 23 December 1916. According to his Medical Records (NAA) 'He remembers reaching Sumla Bay .... went on this beach and up the cliffs. Next recollects being hit by shrapnel in left thigh .... He remembers being carried down to the bottom of the cliff and being put in a gully. Says he was there some time, probably a few days. Remembers being put on a stretcher.' Trooper Williams was invalided to Australia on 8 March 1917, embarking again for Suez on 2 November 1917. Promoted to Lance Corporal on 21 September 1918, he embarked from Kantara for the return home on 15 May 1919 on board HT Orari. Corporal Williams was attached to 3rd Light Horse Regiment at Discharge on 19 August 1919. Son Bill served in the RAAF in WWII.
William was born at Kadina, York Peninsula, South Australia in 1896, youngest of four children of Elisha Williams (b1855 in Ballarat, Victoria) and his first wife Catherine (Kate) Christophers (b1858 at Allen's Creek via Alma Vale, South Australia). Elisha worked as a Miner at Moonta Mines before joining the SA Education Department as a Probationary Teacher at Agery via Moonta in 1880. Elisha and Kate married in 1891 in Yelba, South Australia. Elisha worked with the SA Education Department for forty years - as a Probationary/Provisional Teacher, Teacher and Head Teacher in Penang, Kapunda, Crystal Brook, Oaklands, Peak Vale and Kadina before settling in Port Pirie.
William was a Labourer and Farm Hand in Yatina before he enlisted in the AIF in 1914. Following his Discharge, in 1919 in Adelaide, he married Petrell May Horsell (b1897 in Black Forest, Adelaide, South Australia). William and Petrell settled in Millswood in Adelaide, where they raised their family and William was a Carpenter. William died in 1970 and Petrell in 1984.
