KILLED IN ACTION

PRIVATE FRANK ("BOWIE") POINTER

Still another of Toowoomba's young men has made the supreme sacrifice on the field of battle in the cuase of right and justice, in the person of Private Frank "Bowie" Pointer, only son of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Pointer, who are among the best-known residents of this city.  the sad intelligence was received by Mr. Pointer last night, and when it became known there were general feelings of regret.  The late Private Pointer, who was about 30 years of age, was a great favorite in sporting and other circles in Toowoomba, where he spent most of his life.  It was in June or July of last year that he enlisted in Sydney, despite the fact that he was a married man with a wife and two children.  He had seen considerable fighting, and, according to the information received int he south by his mother, and sent on to his father in Toowoomba, the gallant soldier was killed on October 9.  "Bowie", as he was generally called by his immediatry wide circle of friends, was a fine specimen of australian manhood.  May years ago he was a member of the then invincible Ranger football team, whose memorable contests with the Woombas and other teams (first on the Athletic grounds and later on the R.A. grounds) will not readily be forgotten.  He also played with the Grammars.  The late Private Pointer was, for some tiem, a member of the Toowoomba Permanent Benefit Building Society staff, subsequently with the clerical staff on the Drayton deviation construction works, and later on the Dawson River extension works.  His father, Mrs. H.C. Pointer, has had the distinction of occupying the mayoral chair in Toowoomba, and to him, as well as to Private Pointer's mother and sisters, the sympathy of the community is extended.
