Private Victor Ernest Gannaway (Service No:7366) was the younger of two brothers (Percival and Victor) who served in WWI - their father Herbert also served in WWI, and younger brother Clifford served in WWII. Private Gannway served in the AIF - Home Service with the Army Service Corps as a Driver from 6 September to 25 November 1916, before enlisting in the AIF for Service Abroad on 11 January 1917. Private Gannaway was attached to 11th Infantry Battalion on 29 January 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for Devonport on board HMAT Militiades. Private Gannaway served on the Western front with 66th Infantry Battalion and 17th Field Ambulance, and embarked from Devonport for Fremantle on 1 July 1919 as Nursing Staff on board HT Karmala. Private Gannaway was attached to 3rd Australian General Hospital (AGH) at Discharge on 31 January 1920.

Vic was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1897, second of seven children of Herbert Wilfred Gannaway (b1872 in Gloucestershire, England) and Mary Ann Bradley (b1872 in Kent, England). Herbert immigrated in 1881, arriving in Melbourne with his parents and siblings on board the Superb, and Mary arrived in Melbourne in 1884 on board the John Elder. Herbert and Mary married in Melbourne in 1894, and moved to Western Australia where they settled in the Albany district and raised their family. Herbert was a Farmer and Postmaster at Martyup Siding, and in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF was a Farmer at Bornholm via Albany. Following his Discharge in 1917, Herbert returned to the Albany district, and he and Mary lived at Young's Siding via Albany, where Herbert was a Horticulturalist.

Vic was a Farmer at Bornholm via Albany in 1916 when he enlisted in the Army, and in 1921 in Katanning married Dorothy Alice Truslove (b1903 in Katanning, Western Australia). Vic and Dorothy settled in Bornholm, where they raised their family and Vic was a Farmer. In 1936 Vic joined the WAGR (Employee No:21310) as a Repairer at Bornholm. Vic remained with the Railways, and he and Dorothy lived in Collie and later in Perth. Vic was a Repairer and Goods Porter with WAGR until his death in 1958. Dorothy died in 2001.
