Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Oswald’s older brother, 967 Pte. William Rea 19th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Flers on 14 November 1916, aged 27.

Another two brothers served in the AIF. They were the sons of John George and Jessie Alexandria Rea, of South Grafton, New South Wales. Oswald was still a student when he enlisted, with his parents’ permission.

Oswald joined the 2nd Australian Light Horse and after arriving in Egypt, he caught the mumps. He was transferred to the Cyclist Battalion in France, then to the Light Horse Training Unit and finally to 17 Battalion. While with this unit he was killed in action at Lagnicourt on 15 April 1917.
