Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

98 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 3rd April 1925, Private Alfred George Arnold, 18th Battalion (Reg No-59226), porter and builder from Hann Street, Mayfield, New South Wales and 75 Braye Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 26. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) K SW. 20. Not married.

Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 18th March 1899 to Henry R (died 7.5.1952, age 85) of 250 Glebe Road, Merewether, N.S.W. and Catherine (Kate) Arnold (died 7.10.1943), Alfred enlisted on the 5th June 1918 with the New South Wales Reinforcements at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th July 1918.

Admitted to hospital onboard ship 19.8.1918 (tonsillitis).

Disembarked 27.9.1918.

Admitted to hospital 20.10.1918 (influenza).

Alfred returned home on the 5th September 1919, being discharged on the 20th September 1919.
Mr. Arnold’s name has been inscribed on the Mayfield Methodist Church Roll of Honour and the Waratah Masonic Lodge No. 170, U.G.L. N.S.W. Roll of Honour.
Not entitled to Victory Medal.

Not officially commemorated.

The tragic circumstances of this Digger’s death, accidemtal drowning in the Hunter River, Mayfield, were reported (see links).

Older brother Henry Richard (Harry, born Hamilton, New South Wales 12.4.1894, railway clerk from Anne Street, Mayfield, New South Wales and 75 Braye Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., enlisted 16.8.1915, 1st & 54th Battalions, Reg No-4128A, wounded in action - 19/20.7.1916 (GSW right knee, Battle of Fromelles), 16.10.1917 (gassed), RTA 1.8.1918, discharged medically unfit, died 10th January 1930, age-35) also resting at the cemetery. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) F NE. 1.
