Frank Newland Shepley was born on the 1st of March 1897 in Parkside, South Australia. He grew up nearby in Goodwood Park and was a part of the Church of England. Shepley was an apprentice of an electrical engineer and graduated a senior cadet in 1895. Shepley enlisted on the 21st of January in 1916 at the age of 18 and 10 months. Shepley was a promoted to a private on the 31st of January that same year. Shepley was a part of the 32nd Infantry Battalion which was made up of people from Western Australia and South Australia. The 32nd Infantry Battalion embarked on the 12th of August 1916 on board the HMAT A70 Ballarat.

During October of 1917 Shepley received a shell wound to his right leg in France and was later admitted to Hampton hospital on Duston. In November that same year he was transferred to Boulogne Hospital. He spent the remainder of the war either convalescing or in training camps in England. Shepley was promoted to a Lance Corporal and received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.  Shepley returned to Australia on the 19th of August 1919 at the age of 22 and 5 months. Shepley then married Florance Pearl who died at the age of 64 in April of 1973. Shepley died on the 11th of November 1980 at the age of 83 in Adelaide and has his name on the Unley Town Hall WW1 Honor Board.
