Captain Desmond Henry McDermott (Service Nos:46596/VX13717) served in the Cadets with 46th Battalion before enlisting in the Militia on 26 May 1930 as a Gunner attached to II Medium Brigade AGA. On 27 March 1937 he was appointed Lieutenant, enlisting in the AIF on 30 April 1940 with 2/12 Field Regiment. Promoted to Captain on 18 May 1941, he served in the Middle East with HQ Artillery (17 November 1940 - 27 February 1943) and in New Guinea (24 April 1944 - 10 June 1945) with HQ New Guinea Force and HQ Pacific Island Regiment. Captain McDermott was attached to 2/12 Field Regiment RAA at Discharge on 28 September 1945.
Desmond was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1912, eldest of four children of Henry Augustus McDermott (b1882 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Myrtle Evelyn Pearce (b1888 in Melbourne, Victoria). Henry and Myrtle married in 1911 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Henry was a Department Manager.
Desmond joined the Public Service on leaving school, and was an Accounts Clerk with the Public Health Department when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Desmond returned to Melbourne, living with his parents and employed as a Public Servant (Accountant). Desmond died in 1975.
