John was the son of John Joseph. He left Melbourne with the 3rd Reinforcements U.K. on HMT Marathon on 23 July 1918, reaching London on 27 September and was attached to the 1st Training Battalion Fovant on 29
September. On 25 January 1919 John was sent to France with his unit. He was admitted to the 52nd Stationary Hospital at Le Havre with mumps on 7 March, returning to duty on 27 March. After spending six weeks at Sutton Veny, England, John returned to Australia on the Ulysses on 23 July and was discharged on 16 September.
