41 years ago today, on the 24th October 1984, Private William James Ackroyd, referred to as Bill, 55th Battalion (Reg No-1054), labourer from 27 Tweedmouth Avenue, Rosebery, New South Wales and Darby Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 86. CATHOLIC 3-92. 171.

Born at Carrington, New South Wales on the 17th January 1898 to Percy, died 1955?, and Catherine Ackroyd nee McCallum, died 20.2.1906, Newcastle, N.S.W., age?, sleeping at Sandgate Cemetery, CATHOLIC ? ?, not listed on Sandgate Cemetery database; husband of Doris Elizabeth Ackroyd nee Clarke, married 1947, Petersham, N.S.W., died 12.6.1985, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 79, sleeping here, Bill enlisted on the 15th February 1916 with the 36th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 13th May 1916.

Disembarked Devonport, England 9.7.1916.

Admitted to hospital 1.11.1916 (trench feet), 3.8.1918 (scabies), 15.8.1918 (rheumatism).

Transferred to 55th Battalion 19.9.1917.

Granted leave from 30.10.1917 to 5.11.1917 and 20.3.1918 to 18.4.1918 and 27.1.1919 to 17.2.1919.

Commenced return to Australia 23.6.1919.

Bill arrived home on the 9th August 1919, being discharged on the 23rd September 1919.

Mr. Ackroyd’s name has been inscribed on the Boolaroo District Roll of Honour, Sulphide Corporation Pty Ltd Cockle Creek Works Roll of Honour, St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll, and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Bill’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
