PUBLIC MAN, SPORTSMAN, GRAZIER.
DEATH OF MR. JACK GARRY OF "GARRYOWEN."
One of the best known graziers in southern N.S.W., Mr. J.J. Garry, of "Garryowen," Binalong, died early on Saturday morning last in Harden Hospital following a car accident last week. He was buried at Binalong on Monday morning, following Requiem Mass.
It was one of the largest funerals held at Binalong. All surrounding towns were well represented, including Boorowa, Yass, Harden, Young and Wagga. Jack Garry was a lovable personality He was a World War I man, a first-class footballer and athlete and one of the best known racing men in the south. His son Rex, who was badly wounded in the last war died recently, which was an overwhelming blow to his father. Mrs. Garry, who is an ex-State President of the C W.A. and President of the Binalong branch
of the C.W.A., survives, and one child, Miss Joy Garry. The surviving brothers and sisters are: Mr. Jim Garry, Young; Mrs. P. C. Julian, Vaucluse; Miss Cecelia Garry, "Weilora," Binalong; Mr. Paddy Garry, "Glengarry," Binalong; and Mr. Tom Garry, "Gwandoban," Binalong.
Mr. Garry was born on his late father's Binalong property, "Mylora.'' He was 69 years of age. He graduated as a Bachelor of Engineering at Sydney University, where he was a prominent athlete and a notable Rugby Union football player. He subsequently represented Australia in international Rugby Union. After leaving the University he did practical mining engineering at Gympie. He then settled on his Binalong property, 'Garryowen." He was Binalong's No. 1 public man and sporting man for many years. He was associated with practically every public organisation in Binalong He was a keen cricketer and golfer. Mr. Garry served as a councillor on Goodradigbee Shire Council. He served as a director of the Young P.P. Board. He was President of the Binalong branch of the Graziers' Association and was also a State Councillor of the Graziers' Association of N.S.W. He was a forceful, fluent public speaker and aspired for political honours, but without success.
Mr. Garry contested the Goulburn seat in the State election against Peter Loughlin and J. M. Tully. Loughlin won. Mr. Garry also contested a Federal election against Parker Maloney but again without suceess. A large and representative cortege paid its last respects on Monday day morning to one of the most popular personalities in Binalong and Boorowa, and one of the finest all round sportsmen in the State. He was buried with military honours. Returned soldiers marched from the church to the cemetery, and acted as pall-bearers.
