Served his boiler maker apprenticeship at the Naval Dockyard, Cockatoo Island, Sydney, NSW

Between 16 June 1919 and 16 September 1919 he was employed as a Boilermaker by Osborne Graham & Company shipyard

Commenced return to Australia on 25 September 1919 aboard HT Port Denison disembarking on 17 November 1919

During 1922c James married Rachel A. Lowry in North Balmain
