Private John Daniel Mackie (Service No:VX104893) initially enlisted in the ACMF (Service No:V310254) on 9 September 1941 and was attached to 15th Field Ambulance when he enlisted in the AIF 'in the field' on 5 September 1942. Private Mackie served with 15th and 10th Field Ambulance in New Guinea and Borneo and was attached to 10th Field Ambulance at Discharge on 28 June 1946.

John was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1921, eighth of nine children of Thomas Lawrence Mackie (b1873 in Murchison, Victoria) and Margaret Lillian Madigan (b1883 in Melbourne, Victoria). Thomas was a Labourer at Echuca and Margaret a Presser in Melbourne when they married in 1908. Thomas and Margaret lived in Echuca where Thomas was a Farmer before settling in Melbourne in 1914. Thomas was a Labourer and Railway Employee in Melbourne.

Prior to his enlistment, John worked in Melbourne as a Process Worker and Electrical Welder. John returned to Melbourne and was working as a Machinist in 1956 when he married Mary Elizabeth Roche (nee McGrath; b1925 in Bendigo, Victoria) - Mary, a Divorcee, had served in the WRAAF (Aircraftwoman, Service No:111058). John and Mary lived in Ballarat where John was a Labourer before settling in Melbourne. John died in 1986 and Mary in 2010.
