BASIL WILLIAM NEWSON, the son of Mr. W. J. and Mrs. Elizabeth Newson, was born on 11th May, 1883, at Melbourne, Victoria. He was educated a t the Echuca Grammar School, and entered the service of the Bank at Moama on 11 th May, 1899. In January, 1905, he was appointed to the position of ledger-keeper and in August of the same year he was promoted to accountant at tha t branch. In November, 1910, he went to Rozelle, as teller; in January, 1911, to Wagga Wagga; in June, 1913, to Grenfell; and in the following November to Cootamundra.

Basil William Newson enlisted in the A.I.F. on 17th August, 1914, and in April, 1915, was promoted to the rank of sergeant in the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Brigade. He landed on Gallipoli on the morning of 25th April. He was wounded while on the Peninsula and invalided to Australia.

In January, 1917, he re-embarked for England, where he did duty and transport work between there and France.
