Private Henry John Wiles was born in Tunbridge Wells, England, on 17 November 1893. His father was James Thomas Wiles, and his mother was unknown. During his childhood, Wiles grew up in Port Lincoln, SA. His schooling was not yet discovered at this time. His occupation was a farmer
At the age of 21, on the 1st of January 1915, Henry John Wiles enlisted in Keswick, South Australia. He was enlisted as a Private, and he was part of the 16th Battalion. Henry embarked from Adelaide on the HMAT Borda 23rd June 1915. He was taken on strength at Gallipoli 30th July 1915. He was admitted to 4th Field Ambulance with gastro 13th August 1915 and transferred to hospital in Malta. Then he diagnosed with dysentery he was sent to England for further treatment. He received a further diagnosis of an infection and remained in hospital until 23rd October 1916. He was discharged to duty at the No 1 Convalescent Depot.
On 24th November 1916 Henry proceeded overseas to France on the SS Princess Victoria to rejoin the 16th Battalion in early December. On the 5th February he was admitted to hospital with influenza and then diagnosed with Ottorrhoea on the 23rd February and remained in hospital until 14th March before returning to France the next day.
He was treated for dermatitis in ate May by the Field Ambulance and admitted to hospital in France. He received a diagnosis of impetigo which is contagious and was sent to England for treatment. Once recovered he took leave in late September for a couple of weeks and reported back to the training depot at Perham Downs.
He was caught absent with leave from 27/12/17 at 6:30pm to 29/12/17 at 2:30 pm. He was awarded a 4-day confined to barracks punishment and 3 days without pay. He returned to France in early February 1918. He became sick again 1st April 1918 with Neurasthenia and was treated in hospital in France. He was discharged to based to convalesce and then rejoined the 16th later that month.
On 12th May 1917 Henry received a gunshot wound to his left leg and foot and after initial treatment in the field was sent back to England for treatment. He was discharged medically unfit on 7th November 1918. His parents requested that Henry remain in England for a few months so they could spend time with him after losing Henry’s brother in the war. Henry returned to Australia in April 1920.
Henry John Wiles died at the age of 50 years on the 11th of December 1943. H is buried in West Terrace Cemetery (AIF Section), Light Oval; Row: 3S; C/E/W: C; Site: 33.
