Clayton was the third of four children of Harold Stephen Bickford (b1882 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Hetty Cartledge (b1880 in Lancashire, England). Hetty arrived in South Australia in 1884 on board the Hesperus and in 1911 in Perth WA, Hetty married Harold - who was a Department Manager for Sandover and Coy. The family settled in Perth, WA where Harold was a Business Manager and active with community and business organisations and committees.
Clayton was a Clerk in 1940 when he married Elaine Belle Kempton (b1917 in Geraldton, WA) in Geraldton. Clayton was an Accountant in Katanning WA in 1943 when he enlisted with the ACMF (Private; Service No:W71175). He was attached to 6th Battalion (NSW) VDC when he was Discharged later that year. In 1943 Clayton enlisted in the Australian Army (Corporal; Service No:WX38677) serving with 128 and 137 Australian General Transport Coys. He was Discharged in October 1945.
Clayton and Elaine settled in Nedlands, Perth, WA where Clayton was a Clerk. In the early 1950s the family moved to Melbourne, Victoria where Clayton worked as an Accountant before reloctaing to Deakin, Victoria where he was a Bank Manager. Clayton died in 1992 and Elaine in 2000.
