From Vicki Purnell

After having enlisted a few days earlier, a group of five young men departed Devonport on Tuesday, 3 August 1915, by train en route to the Claremont Training Camp on what they no doubt thought was going to be an adventure of a lifetime.

Those young men, all teenagers, included Alwyn Field, Wallace Chapman and Phil Nothrop. Alwyn, Wallace and Phillip initially were part of the 11th Reinforcements of the 12th Battalion. The three boys would not return home from World War 1.

Pte Phillip Dennis Roy Nothrop Hepburn was born on 2 February 1897, the eldest of 11 children to Walter and Ellen (Nellie) Nothrop of Don. His father Walter was a carter, and Phillip was a labourer at the time of his enlistment.

As a young lad it appears that Phillip was very much involved in the army cadets. He was made a sergeant in the cadets in August 1914 and a 2nd Lieutenant in May 1915 and so it would come as no surprise to his family that he enlisted as soon as he was eligible. He officially enlisted on 4 August 1915 after arriving in Claremont. His service number was 3532, he was 18 years and 6 months old and entered with the rank of Corporal. He was a tall lad standing at 5 feet 10 inches tall with dark brown hair and brown eyes.
