Died on this date – 14th June…… William Bennett Corin was born at Thames, Waikato, New Zealand on 25th March, 1872.

He married Fanny Jewill Huxtable (name as per NZ B.D.M’s website) in 1895 in New Zealand.

A daughter – Fanny Jewell Corin was born on 19th July, 1896 at Karangake, Ohinemuri, New Zealand. A son – William Huxtable Corin was born on 28th October, 1897. [Note: On New Zealand Births’ Deaths & Marriages website - births was registered for Fanny Jewell Corin & William Huxtable Corin – both in 1913 in New Zealand.]

Mary Ann Corin, mother of William Bennett Corin, died on 6th May, 1886 at Thames, Thames-Coromandel District, Waikato, New Zealand.

William Corin, father of William Bennett Corin, died on 25th February, 1888 at Thames, Thames-Coromandel District, Waikato, New Zealand.

The 1912 Australian Electoral Roll for the division of Indi, subdivision of Mitta Mitta, Victoria recorded William Bennett Corin, Miner from Tallandoon.

 

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 9th May, 1916 as a 45 year old, married, Miner from Culcairn, New South Wales.

Private William Bennett Corin, Service number 2524, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on HMAT Anchises (A68) on 24th August, 1916 with the 45th Infantry Battalion, 5th Reinforcements & disembarked at Devonport, England on 11th October, 1916.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

On 12th October, 1916 Private Corin was taken on strength of 12th Training Battalion at Codford, Wiltshire from No. 1 Command Depot.

He proceeded overseas to France on 3rd May, 1917 from 12th Training Battalion & joined 4th A.D.B.D. (Australian Divisional Base Depot) at Etaples, France on 4th May, 1917. Private Corin was marched out to his Unit from 4th A.D.B.D. on 7th May, 1917 & was taken on strength of 45th Battalion in France the same day from 5th Reinforcements.

Private William Bennett Corin was wounded in action in France on 7th June, 1917. He was admitted to 3rd Canadian General Hospital at Boulogne on 8th June, 1917 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to right Thigh. Private Corin embarked for England on 9th June, 1917 on Hospital Ship Jan Breydel.

On 10th June, 1917 Private Corin was admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, London, England with G.S.W. to right Thigh.

Private William Bennett Corin died at 6.50 pm on 14th June, 1917 at 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, London, England from wounds received in action in France – gunshot wound to right Thigh & Gas Gangrene.

He was buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, England where around 360 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
