Died on this date - 2nd January.......Private Roland John Matthews was born at Lea End, Alvechurch, Birmingham, Worcestershire, England in 1890. He came to Australia with his brother in 1912.
Roland Matthews enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 11th July, 1916 as a 26 year old Joiner from Temora, NSW. He joined 13th Battalion at the War Front on 6th March, 1917.
Private Matthews was wounded in action on 17th October, 1917 in Belgium with shrapnel wounds to right thigh & buttock. He was invalided to England & admitted to Garrison Tankerton Hospital, Whitstable on 24th October, 1917.
Private Roland John Matthews died of wounds at 4 pm on 2nd January, 1918. He was buried in St Laurence’s Churchyard, Alvechurch, Worcestershire. He was laid to rest by the side of his ancestors of four generations in the Churchyard.
