Nelson John Kirby
He was born in January 1892 in Rydalmere, New South Wales, Australia the eldest child of Nelson Kirby (born 3rd July 1860 at Watton Carr, Yorkshire England and of Sofia Georgina Smith born 3rd August 1873 at Parramatta, Australia).
He attended Ryde Public School. After leaving school he worked on the family farm for 10 years, helping to clear land and establish a dairy heard.
On 12 May 1916 Nelson John travelled to Brisbane where he enlisted in the A.I.F. At which time he was aged 24 years and 7 months. His papers stated that he was 5 feet 6 and a half inches tall, weighted 10 stone, had grey eyes, brown hair and a dark complexion.
On 15th September that year, Nelson John Kirby, No.4742 of the 26th Infantry Battalion, 12th Reinforcement, embarked on the "Mooltan" bound for England.
The following Autumn he left England for France to join his unit at Etaples.
