Stuart was the third of four children of Thomas Henry Smart (b1879 in Ararat, Victoria) and Susan (Susie) Golding Thomson (b1876 in Buninyong, Victoria). Thomas - a Miner - and Susie married in 1910 in Ararat, Victoria where they settled and raised their family. Thomas later worked as a Plasterer.

Stuart - a Clerk in Melbourne, Victoria - served with the Militia (Sapper; Service No:443033) with 34th Fortress Coy RAE in 1936 and 1937. In June 1940 he enlisted with the Australian Army (Sapper; Service No:NX54281) with 2/20th Infantry Battalion. He was recorded as MiA on 13 April 1942 - a PoW of the Japanese in Malaya. Stuart was recovered from the Japanese on 18 September 1945 and was Discharged in January 1946. Brother Lionel (Private; Service No:VX21856) and Brothers-in-Law William John Downie (Leading Aircraftman: Service No:59750) and Keith Oswald Clyde Abson (Private; Service No:VX21285) also served in WWII.

Keith returned to Melbourne, Victoria and was working as a Clerk when he married Kathleen Maud Roberts (b1914 in Melbourne, Victoria) in 1958. They settled in Melbourne where Stuart worked as a Mail Officer. he died in 1983 and Kathleen died in 1989.
