David Charles Trainer enlisted in Melbourne under the alias of David Charles Cook
He enlisted against his parents wishes as he was only 16 years old. He told his parents that if they objected he would walk to Sydney and enlist.
He left Australia on 26/11/1915 aboard the HMAT Commonwealth as part of the 7th reinforcements for the 22nd Battalion. In Egypt he was transferred to the newly formed 60th Battalion and travelled to France with this unit.
Their first engagement was at Fromelles on 19th July 1916 and David was lost during this battle. His body was never identified and he is remembered on the VC Corner memorial. He died two days short of his 17th birthday.
