BRAHAM, Roy Gilbert (1881-1956)

Roy Gilbert Braham was born on 1 February 1881, the son of David Braham and Rosie nee Cohen.

He was enrolled as a boarder at Geelong College in 1893, where he was in the 1st Football XVIII for four years, from 1896 to 1899, 1st Cricket XI for three years from 1897 to 1899 (Captain in 1899), and also Captain of Boats in 1899. He was enrolled by David Braham who gave his address as 'The Elms', Glenferrie Rd, Malvern.

The Annual Reports disclose an impressive list of academic awards during his period at Geelong College: 1895, 2nd, Elocution.

Roy went on to Ormond College where he studied Dentistry. During World War I, he enlisted on 22 February 1916 at the age of 35 and embarked in July 1916 on HMAT A48 Seang Bee with the Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC), transferring in September that year to the Australian Army Dental Service. Ranked Honorary Lieutenant and Captain in May 1917, he served in various units with the Dental Corps, in camps and hospitals. He returned to Australia, embarking on 13 March 1918 on compassionate grounds, due to the ill health of his brother whom he had previously been in practise with. He was demobilised from the AIF in June 1918.

He died in 1956.

His brothers, Gerald Malvern Braham (1874-1965); Algernon Charles Braham (1876-1942)Douglas Clive Braham (1878-1951); Vivian Geoffrey Braham (1883-1969); and Godfrey Septimus Braham (1885-1955), were also educated at Geelong College.
