Son of Mary O'Connell of Park Street, South Melbourne, Victoria.

Commenced return to Australia on 14 December 1918 aboard HT Burma but went AWOL on 25 January 1919 before stowing away on HT Mamari disembarking on 29 January 1919.

In July 1937 Edward's siblings were making enquires as to whether or a Gratuity had been issued to him as the family had not heard from Edward since 1920 and were making and application to the Supreme Court of Victoria to have Edward listed as presumed deceased.
