Corporal Ivan Norris Fleay (Service No:WX19468) enlisted in the AIF on 2 February 1942 as a Private attached to General Details Camp Claremont then 143 General Transport Coy AASC - appointed Clerk. Private Fleay was attached to 2/8 Infantry Battalion on 7 November 1944 when he embarked with his Unit from Cairns for Aitape on board the Thomas Corwin. Promoted to Corporal on 11 September 1945, he embarked from Wewak for Brisbane on 19 November 1945 on board the Ormiston. Corporal Fleay was posted to PW Camps at Northam and Marrinup in WA, and was attached to 2/8 Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 11 June 1946. Older brother Victor Mervyn Fleay (Service No:WX13075) was KiA in New Guinea, and sister Eunice Gloria (WF96171) served in the AWAS. Younger brother Colin John (Service No:86226) served in the RAAF in 1947.
Ivan was born in Pingelly, Western Australia in 1920, third of six children of Norris Charles Fleay (b1890 at Arthur River, Western Australia) and Cecilia May Dowsett (b1893 in Pingelly, Western Australia). Norris (a Survey Hand in Wagin) and Cecilia married in 1917 in Williams, and lived in Wagin and Pingelly - where Norris was a Survey Hand - before settling at Lake Grace in the 1920s. Norris was a Farmer at Pinjaring via Lake Grace.
Ivan worked as a Farm Labourer in Pinjaring prior to enlisting in the AIF in 1942 and, following his Discharge, in 1951 in Perth married Barbara Emmie Fisher (b1924 in Perth WA) - Barbara was living with her family at Baandee via Kellerberrin. Ivan and Barbara settled at Pingaring via Lake Grace, where they raised their family and Ivan was a Farmer. Ivan was active in local affairs - Chairman of the Farmers' Union. Barbara died in 2011 and Ivan (approaching his 101st birthday) died in 2021.
